In-mut-too-yah-lat-lat (1841-1904)—better known as Chief Joseph has been quite the inspiration for me ever since I was a kid. I went to an elementary school called Chief Joseph in Portland known as the Kitten area. I remember learning history about Joseph there, the clean history. Later as a young adult learned about his true legacy for the freedom of his people.
History:
Chief Joseph's march is often called a foolhardy venture as it refers to the Nez Perce tribe's attempt to flee to Canada in 1877 to avoid forced relocation to a reservation by the U.S. government, similar to "the trail of tears". The Nez Perce were pursued by the U.S. Army and faced numerous challenges along their journey, which ultimately led to their surrender.
